Why is it that some people exercise very hard almost every day and see little return for their effort? While others seem to put in the minimal amount of physical activity and they maintain a healthy lifestyle?

These are questions a new study commissioned by the National Institutes of Health hopes to answer. The study is being administered through six different research facilities. In Louisiana, it is being investigated by the Pennington Biomedical Research facility at LSU.

If you'd like to be a participant in the study here's what you can expect.

What we’re going to do in this study is to collect bio-samples, blood, saliva, urine but also pieces of muscle to really look at the molecular changes.

Associate executive director of clinical research and study investigator Dr. Eric Ravussin made those comments to the Louisiana Radio Network. Dr. Ravussin explained that the benefits of exercise are undisputed yet there are still questions.

I think we all know that there are health benefits to exercise but we don’t know exactly what are the mechanisms of that.

For example, should you run or walk? Should you lift weights or do body weight exercises? How long and at what intensity do you need to exercise to become and stay healthy? Those are the kinds of questions the study hopes to be able to answer.

To a given person, the right formula of exercise to get the most benefits in terms of health.

If you'd like to be a part of the study all you need to do is apply. You can do that through the Pennington Biomedical Research website.
