LSU Wide Receiver Malik Nabers Escapes Legal Troubles After Gun Charges Dropped by DA
LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers will not have to deal with any further legal troubles after New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams declined to reinstate a gun charge against him.
According to Williams' office, the misdemeanor charge against Nabers was dismissed because he is a college student and does not have a prior criminal record.
It also helped that Nabers voluntarily turned in the gun.
Nabers was arrested back in February of this year after a New Orleans Police Department officer spotted him walking down Bourbon Street with what they suspected to be a gun.
In officer cam footage, one officer was heard saying: "Hold on. We might have something. Yeah. We have one."
Then the video showed four officers surrounding Nabers and placing him in handcuffs. Later in the video, the officers explained to Nabers that he needed to have a permit to carry the weapon.
Nabers was booked into jail and charged with illegal carrying of a weapon.
Nabers' case was among more than a dozen illegal gun charges that were refused by Emily Maw, an assistant district attorney.
After Maw's intentions came to light, Williams ordered a review of each of the refused cases. In the end, only three of the 14 cases that were refused are being reinstated.
With the legal troubles behind him, Nabers can get back to focusing his efforts in the classroom and on the football field.
The Youngsville native and Southside High graduate posted solid numbers in his sophomore season last fall. He tallied 72 receptions and 1,017 yards with three touchdowns.
