New Orleans Saints Broadcaster Mike Detillier Has Died

(KMDL-FM) The New Orleans Saints are scheduled to begin the 2026-2027 football Season a week from today in Detroit. Those of us who enjoy listening to New Orleans Saints games on the radio will notice something is missing from Sunday's broadcast: the voice, the humor, the insight, and the passion of Saints broadcaster Mike Detillier.

Mike Detillier passed away at age 65 on Sunday. According to reports, he had received a terminal cancer diagnosis only two weeks ago. He had plans to tell his audience about his diagnosis on Tuesday, which would ironically have been his 66th birthday.

Mike Detillier was a fixture on Saints broadcasts; to me, he always seemed like "the adult in the room" when discussing the Saints' prognosis. He was always a fan but never let his "fandom" get in the way of reality, especially when it came to predicting how the Saints might play.

Mike Detillier Was Highly Respected For His Knowledge of LSU and the NFL Draft

Detillier was well entrenched in LSU Sports as well. He was also a "go-to" interviewee any time the NFL Draft was the topic of discussion. He knew a lot of things, he knew a lot of people, and he knew how to share those insights with fans in such a way that we all felt like we knew a little more about the sport that we all seem to love.

And you could tell that Mike loved sharing what he learned, what his experience taught him, and what are some things that we as fans should consider when watching a specific player, the offense or the defense, or even coaching strategies. He knew how to explain the game in a way that every fan felt like they were an insider.

The New Orleans Saints released this statement concerning the death of Mike Detillier:

The New Orleans Saints organization is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of WWL Radio host Mike Detillier. A proud son of Louisiana, Mike was widely respected as a gifted football analyst, a trusted guide through the NFL Draft, and an exceptional family man. Beyond his incredible contributions to the game, he was above all a true gentleman and a dedicated family man. Saints gamedays at the Caesars Superdome, training camp practices, and press conferences simply will not be the same without his presence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his immediate family and to the community of devoted listeners who considered him a friend over the airwaves.

As one of the many stations along the Saints radio network, we echo those comments and sentiments. His voice, his insight, his passion, and his desire to inform and entertain those who loved the sport he loved will be missed. Mike Detillier was 65 at the time of his passing.
