Fights Erupt At Saints And Cowboys Preseason Practice

(KMDL-FM) The New Orleans Saints and the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL held a joint practice as part of their preparations for the upcoming football season. The practice, held at the Cowboys' facility in California, resembled more of a WWE Event than a football practice, as at least half a dozen fights interrupted the session.

And if you think the players for these two storied NFL franchises are passionate about football and how to play the game, just wait until you see the fans for both teams. Saints fans are among the most passionate in the NFL; Cowboys fans tend to be less emotionally invested in public since sulking is more polite when done in a room by oneself.

Who Do Louisiana Football Fans Root For In the NFL?

When it comes to "rooting rights" for NFL teams in Louisiana, there is a definite split between Saints fans and Cowboys fans. Most of southern Louisiana follows the Black and Gold. A large portion of northern Louisiana leans in the direction of the Cowboys; geographically, it makes sense.

The Saints and Cowboys won't meet on the field in the upcoming NFL regular season, but they do play a preseason game on August 28th. Perhaps the teams are setting the stage for an "epic" end-of-preseason battle, but I doubt it; most of the players who were involved in skirmishes yesterday probably won't be on either team's roster when the season begins in September.

In the video above, you can see just one example of how the day went. In this case, it's Saints rookie receiver Brock Rechsteiner, the son of WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner and cousin of WWE star Bron Breakker. That certainly looked similar to a German suplex right at the end of that video, didn't it?

One more nugget about Brock Rechsteiner: he's suspended for the first six games of the upcoming season because of a violation of the league's performance-enhancing substances policy. I suppose if football doesn't work out, he does have the talent and pedigree for wrestling.

What Other Players Were Involved in Fights Between The Saints and Cowboys?

Among the players involved in other battles during the practice, Cowboys linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku was tossed after he threw a punch. Caelen Carson, also of the Cowboys, was accused of throwing a punch but wasn't caught.

Erik McCoy, a Center for the Saints, threw a helmet; tight end Moliki Matavo wrestled with Cowboys DB Jalen Thompson, and there were probably a few more incidents that didn't get flagged, noticed, or reported.

Saints Coach Kellen Moore and Cowboys Coach Brian Schottenheimer contemplated cutting the practice short because of all the extracurricular activity, but ultimately the teams finished the workout.

The Saints will stay in California for the weekend; they have a preseason game on Saturday with the Rams in Los Angeles. The Cowboys will travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals on Saturday. The two teams, the Saints and the Cowboys, meet in Arlington, Texas, on August 28th. I wonder if any of the players will remember this practice?
