“Miracle Baby” Is Lafayette’s First Baby of 2017 [PICTURES]
The birth of a baby is always special. But just when we all need an affirmation that the new year holds the promise of good things on the horizon, it came in the form of an extraordinary delivery in the wee hours of January 1, 2017.
Lafayette's first baby is most assuredly a miracle baby.
Her mother, 29-year-old Michelle Newsom, found out at the age of 16 that she would never be able to bear a child. Her younger sister Lauren Hayes, who is now 26, immediately offered to be a surrogate mother for Michelle's child when the time was right.
Michelle admits that she didn't take the offer seriously, until she got married in 2015, and she was ready to be a mother.
Asking was weirdly simple. We love each other a lot.
Lauren and her husband Josh have two young children, and the couple was on board with the decision for her to serve as the surrogate for Michelle and her husband Patrick. They began the process of in vitro fertilization, and say their bond has grown stronger.
Sutten Faye Newsom was born at 2:02 a.m. on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at Women's & Children's Hospital in Lafayette. She weighed 7 pounds, 5.3 ounces, and she is 19 ¾ inches long.
So what will Lauren and Josh's role be in Sutten's life? Michelle says that decision was made long before the little girl was born.
Lauren told me early on that she and Josh were going to be the godparents. If I had anyone else in mind, she said I should probably forget about asking them.
They won't have far to go to visit her. Michelle and Patrick live in Loreauville, and Lauren and Josh are building a home about a mile away.
