(KMDL-FM) If you are planning on taking a cruise from the Port of New Orleans and the Port of Galveston in Texas, a major cruise line serving both of those ports has just revealed a major policy change regarding embarkation day.  Let's just say if you miss the boat on this announcement, you'll miss the ship on your scheduled cruise.

The cruise industry has seen an amazing rebirth since it was almost killed by the virus that causes COVID-19. If I had a dollar for every person who told me a cruise ship was a floating petry dish, I'd have enough money to cruise in a better stateroom.

Sure, cruise ships are enclosed vessels, and you spend a lot of time hanging out in close quarters with strangers who are drunk, loud, breathing on you, not washing their hands, and overall being a pain in the aft. But the same can be said of Mardi Gras. And don't lie to me and tell me you're using hand sanitizer after you catch every bead thrown to you.

Granted, most of you who are reading this article are within driving distance of the ports we mentioned, New Orleans and Galveston. But some of the larger vessels in this cruise line's fleet serve the Gulf via Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale and the Port of Miami in Florida. For cruises that require air travel to get to the port of embarkation, Norwegian Cruise Lines, that's NCL to most of us, has announced a major policy change. If you book your air transportation via NCL Air, you will be booked to arrive at the port destination one day ahead of embarkation.

In my many cruises, I have booked air transportation via the cruise line. It has its pros and cons. The pros are that the cruise line will be a lot more understanding about cancelled or delayed flights. The cons are the routes they choose to book aren't usually the most effecient and if you do have to make a connection, they like to make those very tight.

Why Should You Be in Port the Day Before Your Cruise Ship Sails?

And to be honest, if you are having to fly to catch a cruise ship, you do need to be in your port city one day ahead. It's just common sense, and it saves a lot of stress. Many of the cruise lines have "Official Hotels" in port cities. Those hotels usually provide a decent room rate, and many offer complimentary transfers with your luggage to the port and the ship you are sailing.

Look, the airlines are struggling to keep flights on time. The cruise lines, at least Norwegian Cruise Line doesn't want bad air traffic issues to keep you from your vacation. And they aren't holding the ship for you if your plane is late. The new NCL policy was announced on January 26, 2026. Make sure you know before you go.
