As Louisiana citizens are contemplating getting back into some form of "normal" after Governor John Bel Edwards eased coronavirus restrictions earlier this week, it's a reminder that the city of New Orleans usually has slightly different rules.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell held a press conference on Thursday to detail what New Orleans residents will be allowed to do with the updated guidelines, and it seems that she is confident that citizens of her city are doing what they can to fight the spread of coronavirus.

For their part, New Orleans will follow what the rest of the state is doing, which means that most of the bars, restaurants and other businesses will be allowed to return to pre-COVID capacities. Starting today, (Friday, April 30) outdoor gatherings will be increased from 250 people to 500, and indoor gatherings will go from 150 people to 250. Businesses will still require social distancing of six feet between patrons, as well as tables, which is required across the state.

The big difference for New Orleans is that Mayor Cantrell is not lifting the mask mandate, which Governor Edwards did statewide earlier this week. Masks will still be required in the city, and Cantrell told NOLA.com “New Orleans is a safer place to live because of the guidelines we have had in place for the past year-plus and a safer place to visit."
