Officials with Louisiana's Department of Wildlife and Fisheries have announced the closing of the Sherburne Wildlife Management Area. That closing will coincide with the opening of the gates on the Morganza Spillway.

The closing will happen at Midnight on Saturday, June 1st. The gates on the Morganza Spillway are scheduled to slowly open shortly after 1 pm on Sunday. The Sherburne WMA encompasses property in Pointe Coupee, St. Martin and Iberville parishes.

The Wildlife Management Area is also a part of the Morganza Floodway system of the Atchafalaya Basin between the Atchafalaya River and the East Protection Guide Levee. Officials with LDWF say the WMA will remain closed until further notice.

However, plans are to re-open Sherburne WMA as soon as the flood waters have receded and the area has been inspected for damage and safety. Once the area has been deemed safe and any damage has been repaired it will be re-opened for public use.
