Suicide Awareness Walk Draws Over 700
The Out of the Darkness Suicide Awareness and Prevention Walk took place Saturday and drew over 700 participants.
Family and friends of loved ones lost to suicide came together in efforts of raising money for and awareness of suicide prevention. Several teams participated, including Team Burner Turner and Walking for Brooklynne, with some teams consisting of dozens of members.
Participants were treated to the National Anthem, sung by Cajun musician Richard LeBouef, refreshments, tea from Canes, and a fresh-cooked jambalaya.
The event included a raffle for several donated items, a silent auction, a "Memories" board on which participants wrote notes to loved ones taken by suicide, and over 200 butterflies were released.
The 9th Annual Out of the Darkness walk raised (so far) over $31,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the leader in the fight against suicide.
