The Day the Music Died was 52 years ago today, when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper all boarded a plane in Clear Lake, Iowa, where they had just played the Surf Ballroom as part of their 'Winter Dance Party' tour. It would be the last time any of them would play music, as the three perished when their plane crashed in a corn field only a few miles outside of Clear Lake -- a moment later immortalized as "the day the music died" by Don McLean in his song, 'American Pie.'
