The Simpsons Planning Another New Orleans Themed Episode?
It's not that the producers of the long-running animated TV show The Simpsons were wrong about New Orleans when they first "showcased" the Big Easy in Season 4. It's more about the fact that they probably got it right and that's what stung the most.
In Season 4 of The Simpsons the episode entitled "A Streetcar Named Marge" producers used their pointed pen of satirical wit to exclaim in song:
New Orleans! Home of pirates, drunks and whores!/
New Orleans! Tacky, overprices souvenir stores/
If you want to go to hell, you should take that trip/
To the Sodom and Gomorrah on the Mississip!/
New Orleans! Stinking, rotten vomity pile!/
New Orleans! Putrid, brackish, maggoty, vile!
That's not exactly the message the chamber of commerce wanted to be shared on the national television airwaves.
Now comes word via the Hollywood Reporter that Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie could be heading to New Orleans again. The episode would allegedly be based on a trip to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Hmm, there's no comedy material at that event is there?
The reason the speculation that a return trip to New Orleans is likely is because of the man handling the producing chores for the show, David Silverman. He was also behind the Season 4 visit.
It's obvious that Mr. Silverman likes New Orleans for the same reasons that we do. If he really wanted to make the city look bad just think of all the other topics he could raise besides debauchery, tourist traps, and the smell of Bourbon Street in the morning.
