Trip Advisor’s Top Historic Walking Areas in Louisiana

If you've got some time off during the holidays, and you want a little adventure, all you really have to do is stay right here in Louisiana. We have so much to offer, that even if you live here it's hard to see and do everything.

Trip Advisor has found some pretty amazing historic walking areas around the state that are cool as hell, and more importantly, based on traveler reviews. And let's be honest, most of them are n New Orleans, but not all. Check out some of our favorites below, but be sure to see the whole list before you venture out with your walking shoes on for some history and fun. I've been to most of these, and they are definitely worth a return trip.

• Jackson Square, New Orleans - home to St Louis Cathedral, and the Cabildo,  which is now the Louisiana State Museum
• French Quarter, New Orleans - biggest free show in the state, especially during Mardi Gras. It's also the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans
• Our Sacred Stories Creole and African American Cemetery Tour, 410 Basin Street New Orleans. Unique heritage tour that includes ' history, voodoo legends, and the jazz stylings of a real second line'
• Garden District, New Orleans. Historic neighborhood on the streetcar line that includes Tulane University, mansions that are over a century old, and lush greenery year round
• Royal Street, New Orleans. A shopping destination for antique and art lovers, right in the historic French Quarter
• Vermilionville, Lafayette. 23 acre village within the city limits that includes historic Acadian homes that have been lovingly restored to their former splendor. A costumed staff also does cooking and arts and crafts demonstrations during the tours
• Acadian Village, Lafayette. Another example of beautiful Acadian architecture, and homes that have been restored, including a gorgeous chapel, blacksmith shop, and a doctors office. At Christmas the property brightens up with over one million lights for 'Noel Acadien au Village'.
• Algiers Point. Take the ferry across the Mississippi River from the French Quarter for a stroll through unique neighborhoods with gorgeous Greek Revival homes
• Bourbon Street. One of the oldest streets in the city of New Orleans, it includes so much more than bars. Locally owned restaurants, amazing art galleries, and cute coffee shops. You can't come to the Big Easy without a stroll down one of it's most famous streets.
• Charpentier Historic District, Lake Charles. Step back in time to see this neighborhood near the lakefront that is filled with beautiful old south Louisiana homes.
• Red River District, Shreveport / Bossier. Walk along the riverfront where casinos, shops and restaurants are sitting right on the water. Beautiful at sunset
• Julia Row, New Orleans. Right in the middle of the Arts/Warehouse district, these pretty little row houses are indigenous to this famous cultural district.
