UL Softball Extends Win Streaks With Win Over Georgia St.

The Sun Belt Conference softball series win streak continues for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns.

10th-ranked Louisiana defeated the Georgia St. Panthers on Friday evening, 12-3, in 5-inning mercy-rule in the middle game of a three-game, weekend, Sun Belt Conference series at Yvette Girouard at Lamson Park.

The wins extended UL's current win streak to 18 games.

Coupled with their win over Georgia St. in the series opener on Thursday night, the Cajuns also extended their league series win streak to 53, a school and Sun Belt Conference record, as well as the longest current conference win streak in the nation.

Louisiana has not dropped a conference series since the weekend of St. Patrick's Day in 2013.

The Cajuns, who also defeated the Panthers, 10-2, on Thursday evening, recorded their 40th victory in that victory for the 21st-consecutive season.

With the triumph, UL also ran their Sun Belt Conference win streak to 20 games to begin this season, while improving their overall league win streak to 25 games, dating back to last year.

Louisiana got on the scoreboard first, plating 4 runs on 2 hits in the bottom half of the second inning, including a run-scoring single by Bailey Curry, a sacrifice-fly by Kara Gremillion, and a sacrifice-fly that scored two runs by Julie Rawls, to give them a 4-0 lead, an advantage they would not relinquish.

UL added three more runs in the bottom half of the 3rd inning, including an RBI groundout by Casidy Chaumont, to widen their lead to 7-0.

The Cajuns put up four more runs of the game in the bottom half of the 4th inning, when Sarah Hudek belted a solo home run, her 10th of the season, before Lexie Comeaux drove home a run with a two-out single, and Kara Gremillion singled home a run, following a throwing error, which scored two runs, to make it 9-0.

Georgia St. scored their only three runs of the game, all unearned, in the top half of the 5th inning.

That turned out to be all the scoring in the game, as Louisiana went on to the 12-3 mercy-rule win.

Louisiana, who outhit Georgia St., 8-5, was led at the plate by Hudek and Kourtney Gremillion, who collected two hits apiece, while Rawls and Kara Gremillion drove home two runs each.

Summer Ellyson (28-4) recorded the win inside the circle for the Cajuns, tossing 4.0 innings of two-hit, shutout softball, while striking out 8 batters.

Amanda Chance (0-13) suffered the loss for the Panthers, allowing 7 runs on 5 hits, over 3.0 innings.

With the victory, the Cajuns improved to 41-4, overall, and 20-0 in Sun Belt Conference play, while Georgia St. dropped to 7-39, and 4-16, respectively.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Saturday afternoon, with first-pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
