It's not very often I get to say I was right, but I was right on this one. Of course, to get this one right would have been at the same difficulty level as predicting the sun might rise in the morning. A bill to discontinue and disallow our state's universities to have an officially licensed alcoholic beverage has quietly been deferred.

I am not sure what deferred means in political terms but my guess is this. Legislators who understand how Louisiana politics works quietly told the legislator who sponsored this bill to take his football and go home.

Was there really a doubt that Bayou Bengal Lager and Ragin' Cajuns Genuine Louisiana Ale would be taken away? Nope. The reason M-O-N-E-Y. I know you were just as shocked as I was.

The schools need the income associated with the selling of licensed products, beer included. The companies that produce these fine beverages have poured a lot of cash into the marketing of these products. The liquor lobby in Louisiana is one of the strongest government forces in our state. This bill never had a chance.

Now, we just need to come up with other concoctions for our other state schools. The most obvious to me is "Southern" Comfort. You could also have Monroe Bland Pilsner or maybe Tulane Pretentious Stout. Perhaps I shouldn't be put in charge of creating or naming these products. I do seem to have a bias.
