Ask anyone around this part of Louisiana what the worst thing about living here is and they will likely utter the word "traffic". In Louisiana, we love our cars and we love to drive. We just don't like the other people who love their cars and want to drive on the same roads at the same time as we do. I think that's an adequate assessment of life in the Boot.

We all know it only takes a short drive around the block to figure out Louisiana's roads have something to do with the way folks drive, right? Or maybe it's just a Southern thing, this inability to maintain proper control of an automobile.

As it turns out the folks at Stacker looked into the way we drive. By "we" I mean the entire country and they've concluded that four of the states with the worst drivers in the nation are in the part of the country that we refer to as the South. And unfortunately one of the states in the top ten is the Sportsman's Paradise.

Does Louisiana Have the Worst Drivers in the South?

No, our state is not home to the worst drivers in the South or the nation for that matter, but we are pretty darn close to the top of that list. Only one other southern state can lay claim to the status of "worse drivers than in Louisiana". Do you want to take a guess as to which state that is?

If you said Mississippi, you'd be wrong but the Magnolia State is still in the top ten. In fact, the Stacker Study found that Mississippi drivers were the eighth worst drivers in the nation. They would have scored higher but not a lot of people in Mississippi can afford cars so it brings their total carnage down and their driving score up.

Does Texas Have the Worst Drivers in the South?

How can you be a bad driver when you "Drive Friendly the Texas Way." That slogan always cracked me up. You see, I have seen in person what "Driving the Texas Way" looks like, and let's just say there are safer drivers in a demolition derby. Still, the good folks of Texas are not the worst drivers in the South, they are number six on the Stacker list.

Does Alabama or Arkansas Have the Worst Drivers in the South?

Nope, drivers in those states actually fared pretty well in the Stacker study. So did the drivers from Georgia. So it's got to be Florida that is home to the worst drivers in the south, right? No, drivers who putter around God's waiting room may drive slowly but they are fairly safe most of the time.

The Southern State with the Worst Drivers is?

South Carolina. Yeah, the folks in the Palmetto State spend a lot of time on the roadway. Many of them spend a lot of time on the roadway after drinking. And, a large number of the South Carolina contingent are not acquainted with modern luxuries like seatbelts and turn signals. But South Carolina only ranked number three on the list for the whole country.

What Two States Have the Worst Drivers in the Country?

As luck would have it both states at the top of the bad list are states with plenty of wide open spaces. So maybe at least the poor drivers won't hit anything. Have you got a guess as to which states suck behind the wheel even more than the guy you had to drive next to on the way to work this morning?

The Big Sky Country of Montana and the Land of Enchantment, also known as New Mexico are you number one and number two for lunacy on the roadway. We should note that the Stacker study used data concerning seatbelt use, distracted driving fatalities, DUI fatalities, speeding fatalities, and uninsured motorists to come up with their rubric.

So, if you see a car on the road with a Montana, New Mexico, South Carolina, or gulp Louisiana license plate check your deductible and hold with both hands because it could get a lot bumpy just being on the road with them at the same time.
