What Was the Craziest Lie Your Parents Told You?
For years, I believed that if I made an ugly face, and the wind changed while that ugly face was on my face, it would FOREVER STAY ON MY FACE!
Why? Because that's what my mother told me. "John! Don't make that face! If the wind changes, it'll stay like that!" (I can still hear it in her voice.)
Fast forward a few years to when I was out on a date with a girl and she was reacting to my cooking. I said, "If the wind changes, your face will stay like that!"
Well, a new look came across her face, and it was one of confusion. "What do you mean?", she asked. When I explained, she couldn't help but stifle a laugh.
That's when I learned that the wind CAN NOT change your face. (Embarrassing, I know.)
Another lie our parents told was that our father had a little television at work that allowed him to see what we did all day. He would come home, speak to our mom in French, and then a little while later he would scold us for doing whatever we had done.
HE DIDN'T HAVE A LITTLE TELEVISION TO SEE US WITH!! It was our mother, telling him how we were bad that day!
I was thinking back to things when I wondered what other lies my parents told me. Of course, the typical Santa/Easter Bunny/Tooth Fairy lies, but what else? I may never know.
I posed the question on Facebook to see what lies YOUR parents told you. Here are some of the answers.
SANTA CLAUS, EASTER BUNNY, TOOTH FAIRY
A little lie is still a lie, right?
How many of you think that Santa and the Easter Bunny are good lies? I was speaking with a friend and she thinks that those are some of the best lies her parents told her.
I guess that the "magic" that comes with Santa at Christmas helps make memories for people. The kids coming to the Christmas Tree on Christmas morning, wide-eyed and full of wonder. I can understand why people still perpetuate that story.
On the other hand, I know a family that tells their children that there is no Santa or Easter Bunny or Tooth Fairy. Their reasoning is this: they don't want their kids to equate that to the stories of Jesus they are told. They are afraid that if the kids find out they lied about Santa that they might think they lied about other stuff, too.
THAT'S NOT CHICKEN!
How many of you were told only after the fact that what you were eating wasn't actually what you thought you were eating?
I am trying to recall if mom ever told us that the tongue she cooked was roast (I mean, technically, it WAS a roast. Roast tongue!), but I am pretty certain that she didn't correct a customer when he was telling others it was roast!
Taste just like chicken!! Ha!
The Gates sisters remember a shared experience:
Laura's sister, Julie, remembers it well!
UPHILL, BOTH WAYS!
This one, of course, is as old as the hills. (Pardon my pun!)
DOES THE EASTER BUNNY DELIVER CHOCOLATE? OR EGGS?
It appears that Paul saw through the deceit in his parents' words!
WAIT: THERE WERE OTHERS?
I thought I was the only one who got this lie!
After speaking with a few of my friends, I understand that the "if the wind changes" lie was pretty common.
So, what can you add to this list?
