‘Who’s The Boss Star’ Dies

Actress Katherine Helmond has died. Some fans might remember her from her time on the groundbreaking television show Soap. She played the quirky and eccentric Jessica Tate on that series that aired from1977 to 1981. She also was a fan favorite on another sitcom. You might remember Helmond as the saucy and flirtatious Mona Robinson from TV's Who's The Boss.

These television roles not only earned her fame and fortune in the public eye but she was recognized by her peers on multiple occasions for the way she brought life to her characters. Helmond earned back to back Emmy nominations for her role as Jessica Tate on Soap. She won a Golden Globe for her performance in that role in 1981.

Helmond also earned a Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actress in her role as Mona Robinson on Who's The Boss. She earned that award in 1989.

In a 2008 interview with the Television Academy Foundation, Helmond had this to say about why she was attracted to comedic roles.

Laughter is such a marvelous thing really, it’s such a healing thing, that’s one of the reasons I’ve always enjoyed doing comedy

Helmond's comments were chronicled in a story published by Deadline Hollywood.

Born in Galveston Texas in 1925 Katherine Helmond appeared to have success in whatever genre of theater she chose. In addition to her accolades for Soap and Who's The Boss, she starred on Broadway and earned a Tony Award nomination. She was also the voice of Lizzie from the Disney/Pixar Cars movies.

It is believed that Helmond's death was as the result of complications from Alzheimer's Disease. Katherine Helmond was 89 at the time of her passing.
