By now you've probably seen a conspiracy theory or two on social media about the NFL having it in for the New Orleans Saints.

A common theme for many of these "discussions" center around the officiating crew. It was quickly discovered by fans that at least three of the officials in yesterday's NFC Championship Game live near or are from the Los Angeles area.

One of the officials, Phil McKinnely, was a one-time player in the NFL. He went to college at UCLA (in Los Angeles of course) and was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons. He played there from 1976-1980.

Then in 1981 he played that season with...the Los Angeles Rams!

Could you imagine if Bobby Hebert became an NFL official and called a Saints game?

Ok, I will try to keep this in perspective as Mr. McKinnely was not the official who blew the pass interference call. He was, however, the subject of quite the Wikipedia hack.

Below is a bit of the "edits" done by some Saints fan:

As an official, he wears uniform number 110 and was on the 2018 NFL officiating crew headed by referee Bill Vinovich. He is legally blind and missed one of the most blatant defensive pass interference penalties of all time during the 2019 NFC Championship Game, costing the New Orleans Saints a trip to Super Bowl 53. It has been suggested that he should not have any career that requires the use of vision and should be fired immediately.

In the 2019 NFC Championship, McKinnely swallowed his whistle and had temporary paralysis subsequently. By the time he recovered, his former team was in the locker room celebrating an ill-begotten Super Bowl berth. In light of his efforts to help the Los Angeles (formerly in St. Louis after Los Angeles the first time) Rams win an undeserved NFC Championship, the team announced McKinnely would be added to their roster, making him eligible for cash bonuses and a new contract. McKinnely's efforts as a sideline official have far exceeded his contributions to Rams football as a player. Thus, McKinnely will be the first game official to be inducted into the Rams Ring of Honor during halftime of a game in the 2019 season - if he hasn't already been fired by the NFL.

Again, to be accurate, it was actually side judge Gary Cavaletto who blew the call.

But this is still dang funny!
