Year-Round School Bill Advances in Legislature
Louisiana students could soon be going to school year-round.
The House of Representatives is considering a bill that would allow school districts to test out an 11-month schedule under a “balanced calendar.”
House Bill 528, authored by Rep. Ray Garofalo (R-Chalmette), has already cleared committee and is pending a vote in the full House.
State Superintendent Cade Brumley supports the plan, saying students lose much of what they’ve learned in school during the summer break. Some northern Louisiana school districts also support the bill, saying they've seen evidence of increased reading scores in students who attended classes in the summer.
Teachers' unions, some school boards, and some legislators oppose it. They worry it breaks tradition. They also say there's no concrete data proving a year-round calendar works to help students retain information.
