While the gumbo will be cooking this weekend in New Iberia, Louisiana it won't just be at any cookoff. It will be the 33rd Annual World Championship Gumbo Cookoff and it means so much more than just a great bowl of gumbo.

This week our Shaking Out the Good Stuff spotlight falls on the 33rd Annual World Championship Gumbo Cookoff hosted in downtown New Iberia.

Now it's true, gumbo will be the star of the show but the good that has grown out of that bowl of gumbo over the past 30 years has been imeasurable in Iberia Parish and in the city of New Iberia. Each year the promise of good gumbo, great music, and a South Louisiana good time draws thousands to downtown New Iberia and the banks of the Bayou Teche.

What started out as a way for the Iberia Chamber of Commerce to fund some of its special projects has grown into a major economic engine for the community. Back in 1989 when the first World Championship Gumbo Cookoff was contested there were barely a dozen teams participating. Many of the gumbo cooks served their dishes right out of the bed of their pickup trucks.

Fast forward three decades and a few dozen cooks have grown to more than 100. A couple of hundred visitors have grown to more than 30,000. And the number of different gumbos served is now in the triple digits.

You can experience it all for yourself this weekend. The event will be held in Bouligny Plaza in Downtown New Iberia on both Saturday and Sunday. You can find out more about the 33rd World Championship Gumbo Cookoff by clicking right here.

And speaking of Iberia Parish it's a great place to live and work and Morton Salt's Weeks Island facility has openings they are looking to fill immediately. There's top pay for the right person and you'll be working for a company with a great reputation not only in Iberia Parish but around the world.
