On this edition of "The Lafayette Food Junkie Show," Tiffiany Decou, the "Lafayette Food Junkie," and Chef Zack Doise of Phares' Restaurant discuss the idea of customers paying surcharges to cover healthcare costs for restaurant workers.

“The Lafayette Food Junkie Show,” which has been airing from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday nights here on Newstalk 96.5 KPEL, has given Lafayette and the Acadiana area its own show dedicated to the food we all love to enjoy and talk about since November of 2013!

When Obamacare was signed into law by the President in 2010, it meant that businesses with more than 50 full-time employees had to start offering affordable health care benefits to its employees, or start paying fines. Some restaurants, particularly in San Francisco, have found a controversial way of offering health benefits to their employees: get the customers to pay for it.

What these restaurants are doing is charging their customers either a flat fee or a percentage per ticket. One restaurant Tiffiany cites, for instance, is an eatery that charges $2.50 a ticket.

"I like the fact that they are giving it (health care benefits) to people who aren't even full-time...even part-timers (are getting the benefits in some restaurants)."

But, how does this affect customers giving tips to their waiters or waitresses, on top of a healthcare surcharge?

"It brings up the question: Should the restaurant do that to the customer or should the restaurant lose the money from every ticket that they process themselves...take it out of their profits every night?" mentioned Chef Zack.

Ultimately, they are both in favor of the idea, but it still brings up many questions to them.
