The end is near for a legendary Breaux Bridge, Louisiana eatery.

Le Café, located at 124 Rees Street, will be closing its doors on November 15th after 35 years in business.

The quaint restaurant has most notably been known as the home of some of the best fried fish and shrimp poboys around. (That and the fact that the former was available in "all-you-can-eat" form.)

The history of Le Café

The restaurant was opened in August of 1989 by Ann Newland, who was teaching at the time. Newland said she opened the restaurant as a way to help pay for her children's tuition. When she retired from teaching, she segued full-time at the restaurant.

According to Newland, Le Café started out more like a hamburger and french fry joint. She had an uncle who owned a restaurant in Texas, and he taught her to fry fish and shrimp, and that's pretty much where things took off.

Le Café prided itself on freshness -- from fresh grease, fresh fish, fresh shrimp -- fresh everything. Everything is made to order and customers have been coming back year after year.

What customers have said about Le Café

A quick few of the restaurant's reviews and you can see how it survived for 35 years. Here are a few left on Google Review:

Food was awesome!! Very affordable! Best fried catfish I've ever had!! Customer service was AWESOME!! - Brock S.

The place is very small, but it is fantastic on the taste! I highly recommend this lil spot for their all-you-can-eat catfish!! - Renea D.

I have never been disappointed about the quality or quantity of the food. All employees are very pleasant and make my trip special. I drive 35 miles 1 way to eat there and it is worth it. My favorite place for fish and shrimp. The oysters are super good also. Will be back soon. - Ronald A.

Best of luck, Ann!

In a recent interview with ExperienceAtchafalaya.com, Ann Newland said, "I'm going to miss that camaraderie. I'm going to miss my patrons."

We can only imagine, Mrs. Ann. Congratulations to you and your wonderful staff for all those many years of filling our bellies with all that deliciousness.
