Breakfast Item Served in Louisiana Schools Subject to USDA Recall
(KMDL-FM) The United States Department of Agriculture and the Food Safety Inspection Service have announced a recall of a popular breakfast item that is currently included as part of the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. These items have been sold and served nationwide, including in schools in Louisiana.
The reason for the recall is a concern over Listeria. Food contaminated with Listeria could lead to listeriosis. Listeriosis is a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, younger children, and anyone who is immunocompromised. It is believed that a primary ingredient in the recalled food products could have been contaminated at some point before the products were cleared for shipping.

The primary symptoms of a Listeriosis infection are fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Many times, those symptoms are accompanied by gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea or vomiting. Fortunately, the symptoms and the disease can be successfully treated with antibiotics.

Which Foods Are Included in the School Breakfast Recall?
The products that have been recalled were manufactured by M.C.I. Foods of Santa Fe Springs, California. The company is recalling some 91,585 pounds of ready-to-eat breakfast burrito and wrap products containing egg. The scrambled egg ingredient is believed to be the reason the recall was enacted.
The following brands are included in this recall. They are Los Cabos, El Mas Fino, and Midamar Brand products. Again, all of these products have been included and approved for inclusion in the USDA's National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.
Those are some of the labels of the recalled products. You can see the complete list of recalled breakfast items. In addition to the general appearance of the recalled items, consumers are asked to scrutinize the establishment numbers, which are “EST. 1162A” or “P-5890A”.
Where Were The Recalled Breakfast Items Manufactured?
The production run of the recalled products was from September 17, 2025, to October 14, 2025. There is a concern that schools and institutions that use these products as part of their daily and weekly nutritional planning will have recalled items in cold storage. The USDA urges those institutions not to serve those products and to discard them immediately.
If you have a question or a concern involving the recalled products, and what you, as a consumer, need to do to qualify for reimbursement or product replacement, you may dial M.C.I. Foods at 888-345-5364.
