Caddo Parish Wastewater Shows Highest Meth Levels in the World
SHREVEPORT, La. - A new study is shining a spotlight on a troubling trend in North Louisiana, and the findings are raising eyebrows across the country.
Researchers with LSU Shreveport studying wastewater in Caddo Parish say they have detected methamphetamine levels that are possibly the highest ever recorded anywhere in the world. The findings come from an ongoing effort to use wastewater monitoring as a tool to track public health trends, substance abuse, and emerging threats within communities.
What Wastewater Can Reveal About Drug Use
It may sound strange, but wastewater testing has become an increasingly valuable tool for researchers and public health officials.
By analyzing untreated sewage, scientists can estimate the presence of various substances being used within a community. The testing doesn't identify individual users, but it does provide a broader snapshot of trends happening across an entire city or Parish.

OK, so why are Caddo Parish's meth levels so off the chart?
Dr. Kevin Murnane, PhD, Lab, LSU Health Shreveport Associate Professor of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Neuroscience tells KTALNews.com -
My best educated guess is there is a confluence of a lot of vulnerability factors. There’s not one thing that absolutely leads to methamphetamine use. Associated with lack of economic opportunity and hope about your future

Researchers say the levels found in local wastewater were significantly higher than those documented in many other regions that conduct similar testing. So significantly higher that the study shows meth levels in Caddo Parish are the highest recorded anywhere in the world.

Why Researchers Are Paying Close Attention
Methamphetamine remains one of the most dangerous and addictive illegal drugs in the United States.
Health experts say long-term meth use can lead to severe physical and mental health problems, including heart disease, strokes, anxiety, paranoia, and psychosis. The drug has also been linked to increased overdose deaths, particularly when mixed with other substances.
The findings from Caddo Parish come as Louisiana continues to face ongoing struggles related to substance abuse and addiction.
Public health officials have spent years working to address issues involving opioids, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and other dangerous drugs that continue to impact communities throughout the state.
