Caroline Fayard Announces For U.S. Senate

Caroline Fayard, a New Orleans attorney, announced Thursday that she will be running to become Louisiana's next United States Senator. Fayard is currently the lone Democrat in a field full of Republican contenders who hope to take the seat of retiring Senator David Vitter. 

Fayard ran unsuccessfully for the office of Lt. Governor in the 2015 election. Even though the race did not result in a victory it did give Fayard the opportunity to gain some name recognition throughout the state.

Bernie Pinsonat, a political analyst, suggests that Fayard's announcement was all about timing.

I think she got in the race early to keep other democrats out. I think it would be great for her if it's just her.

Pinsonat told the Louisiana Radio Network that the possibility of being the lone candidate for a major political party in a major Senate race could mean a lot of support from outside the state of Louisiana.

She doesn't have to share money with the national democratic party, she would get to be there candidate that's a big plus for her.

Pinsonat went on to say that Fayard does come from an affluent family and she should be able to generate campaign funding with relative ease. He also suggested that even if she was the lone Democrat in the race she might get most of her help indirectly from her Republican opponents.

Will the republicans help her this year and destroy each other, which made John Bel Edwards possible in becoming governor?

Only time will tell and there are still several months of campaigning to go through before Louisiana voters will be asked to choose their next Senator in November of this year.
