Ask almost any fan of KFC, you know Colonel Sanders place, what they love about dining there and you will eventually get down to the gravy. Yeah, the KFC gravy is apparently one of the seven wonders of the culinary world. I have had people tell me it's a cure for sore throats, it can help a child fall asleep, and it can even calm the rantings and ravings of mothers-to-be.

While I can't personally vouch for all of those claims, they are claims that have been spoken to me by real live human beings that I trust. But, come on, we all know KFC gravy is just that, it's gravy. But before we look at how the Colonel makes his gravy let's get to know gravy a little better.

For residents of South Louisiana, gravy and roux are very close cousins. Roux would be the base of the gravy, it's a mixture of fat and flour. Usually, it's butter or oil or pan drippings that serve as the fats. The fats and flour are blended and browned together. Then seasonings are added. That's basically gravy.

As you might imagine KFC probably has a lot of seasoned flour left over from breading all of that chicken they serve, so it's no surprise that some of that flour goes into the recipe, or does it?

Here is Tik Tok video from @cheddar4.7 who claims to be a KFC worker based in the UK. Here is how @cheddar4.7 claims the Colonel makes his gravy.

Do you see anything wrong with the way the Colonel makes gravy? I actually don't. That's how you do it and I would imagine if you're making gravy on a large scale for the hundreds of customers a KFC franchise could serve in a day, this method makes the most sense.

Maybe KFC gravy is like Louisiana boudin. It's delicious to eat, just don't ask what's in it or how it's made because in this case, too much knowledge would be a dangerous thing. And just because we like to show as many sides as we can, here's what it looks like behind the scenes at a Popeyes Chicken Restaurant.

Granted we didn't get as deep into the "gravy" as we did in the KFC video. I guess that just goes to show you why they put a wall between the customer lobby and the kitchen. Not all that is delicious is fun to watch being prepared.

Now, lift your cup of gravy high and drink up, come on you know you've done it, maybe that one time at band camp?
