It was about 24 hours ago that much of South Louisiana was being inundated by strong and severe thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall. A  similar scenario is shaping up in the atmosphere for a repeat of those heavy rains, gusty winds, and raucous thunder and lightning later today, tonight, and Wednesday.

At least one severe weather watch has already been issued for the area. That is a  Flash Flood Watch and it has been posted for all but the extreme southwestern corner of the state. Forecasters say a stalled frontal boundary draped over the area could result in an additional one to three inches of rainfall over the watch area.

Meanwhile, that frontal boundary is also expected to create enough instability in the atmosphere to kick off some strong thunderstorms too. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the entire state of Louisiana in the marginal risk zone for severe weather over the next 24 to 36 hours.

As you can see in the HRRR Model guidance from KATC Chief Meteorologist Rob Perillo much of today's heavier rainfall will happen after sundown tonight and through the early morning hours of Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the same modeling system, the HRRR, suggests that rainfall rates across the region could be quite significant in a very short period of time. Hence, the reason for the need to issue a Flash Flood Watch.

The European Model also has a significant rain event forecast for South Louisiana over the next few days however, model guidance from that data suggests rainfall rates will be about an inch less than what the HRRR model is prognosticating.

The good news is that most of the rain will exit the area by Thursday and if the forecast holds we could be setting up to enjoy a really great weekend of weather with a lot of sunshine and a chance to drain just a little bit.

Meanwhile, you might want to use this inside time to take care of a few chores around the house. Oh, your house is clean? Really? Is it clean in these places?
