Food and Drug Administration – Seafood Recall Affects Louisiana

It seems as if consumers in Louisiana have been affected by some kind of product safety recall every day this week. There have been recalls on the foods we eat, the treats we share with our pets, and goodness knows what else we've bought that we shouldn't have purchased.

For the most part, none of these recalls have been because of serious illness or injury, at least they haven't been so far. That's probably because Louisiana consumers know the drill. When a product is recalled you return it to the place you bought it for a refund or a replacement or you contact the manufacturer and they handle the details.

In the case of today's recall, concerns a product that is very near and dear to our lives and livelihoods in Louisiana. I guess it is good news that the product being recalled over concerns of listeria is not a locally grown or harvested product. Lord knows our Louisiana fishing families have had enough to worry about with drought, foreign products, and inflation.

The recall which was made public in a notice from the Food and Drug Administration earlier this week affects salmon slices that were sold in a number of southern states including Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas, and Tennessee.  The product is sold in several other states as well as sold under the brand name "Foppen Seafood Smoked Norwegian Salmon Slices".

If you happen to have that product in your home you'll want to check out the label and see if what you have is labeled as "Lot#412". Products with that designation should be discarded or returned. The products are the "toast-sized" salmon slices that are sold in the 8.1-ounce package. You should also look for this verbiage on the product label, UPC code ‘8 40137 10000 2 and lot number ‘412.’

Just in case you have the product and have eaten some of it the symptoms you'll want to be watching for include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. So far no such illnesses have been reported but should you begin to experience any of those contact your doctor or visit a nearby walk-in clinic.
