If you live in the Gulf South you have sinus problems. I know that's a bold blanket statement to make but if you live in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, or any other state that's within shouting distance of the Gulf of Mexico sinus issues are almost a birthright.

The experts say that the reason those of us who live in places where hurricanes sometimes pass has such an issue with our noses and our ability to breathe is moisture. The high moisture content allows for widespread airborne fungi. These fungi get into our nasal passages and cause inflammation. The inflammation is what narrows our sinus passages and then the allergies and sinus infections can thrive.

For many of us when the ability to breathe becomes a struggle we reach for an over-the-counter nasal spray. The sprays give us the feeling of being able to breathe better because they moisten the nasal passages. They often contain anti-inflammatory ingredients which reduces that swelling and stuffy feeling. And, many sprays also contain antihistamines which slow down our body's overreaction to things like dust, danger, and the aforementioned fungi.

If you do use nasal sprays you should be aware that the Food and Drug Administration is supporting a recall that has just been issued on three different types of nasal spray rinses over concerns they could be contaminated. The FDA release about the recall uses the term "life-threatening" contamination. The use of these products, especially by those who have had recent sinus surgery could result in some serious medical conditions.
