You would think that we the people would be able to simply demand that candidates debate each other before every election. That is the farce of democracy.

It is not we the people who are in charge of those in charge, it's those in charge simply allowing us to think we really have a say so in how things are done. Cynical? A tad. Realistic, probably more so than most of us would like to admit out loud.

I personally think every election for national office should require a debate. You'd think it would be as simple as the people that are running are put in front of the people that are voting and each candidate gets a few minutes to earn your vote. It isn't that simple because we the people who cast the votes are uniformed, ignorant, and totally apathetic when it comes to our government. The only people that will be upset by that last statement are people like me that have voted in every election they've ever been allowed to vote in.

Should Mary Landrieu and Bill Cassidy debate? I think so. That way, we can see in person which one is the better liar. Will they debate? Yes they will. Landrieu, Cassidy and Rob Maness will appear on the same stage together October 14 in Shreveport and then again in Baton Rouge on October 29. They will smile, be polite, clench their fist, look concerned, smirk at their opponents, and say absolutely nothing.

Ms Landrieu is currently riding Mr. Cassidy's backside about having more debates. He says he is fine with having just the two. Mr. Maness is just grateful that they remembered to invite him. While Landrieu is the incumbent, the polls show Cassidy in a very strong position to defeat her. So, the less he says, the better his chances of not screwing anything up. Mr. Maness is in a position to make sure that Ms. Landrieu wins the election because his supporters would most likely support Mr. Cassidy if he were not in the race.

Oddly enough the first debate on October the 14th will be one that most of us in South Louisiana will miss. Why? It will be up against the UL vs Texas State football telecast. After all, this is only our government and our future, it certainly can't compare to football.
