Take a deep breath and enjoy the clean air for a day or two because that is all you're going to get. This is the calm before the political runoff storm as far as the ears and eyes of Louisiana voters are concerned. The runoff for the United States Senate seat between Mary Landrieu and Bill Cassidy is about to become a three week mudfest.

Chances are you won't see the actual candidates or candidate committees sponsoring those heinous "my opponent hits puppies" advertisements . The real dirt will come from the national big spenders like the Democratic or Republican parties. There will also be nasty attack ads from those all too secretive political action committees.

Even though the Republican party now has control of congress they still want Mary out of the Senate. The Democrats think Mary should stay and both political entities are planning for a dirty fight up until December 6th. Roy Fletcher a political analyst says the Democrats are the ones with the most to lose if they don't at least make an effort on Landrieu's behalf.

"They'd be pouring gasoline on the open fire.  They've got to do something in order to, at least, save face."

Fletcher's comments were reported by the Louisiana Radio Network.

Landrieu's campaign is approaching the runoff very aggressively. They have challenged Cassidy, the leading vote getter in the November 4th election, to no less than 6 debates before the runoff. Cassidy's camp is playing it close to the vest and will more than likely decline those offers. Especially since most political pundits see the race as Cassidy's to lose.
