If You Bought Meat or Bagged Citrus at Walmart You Might Have $500 Coming to You

The payouts are part of a class-action lawsuit that Walmart has reportedly agreed to. The complaint against the giant retailer suggested that Walmart stores sold weighted groceries, you know items like meat, seafood, and citrus products for higher than the advertised prices.

According to the website TopClassActions.com you are eligible to be considered for payment if you purchased any of those items at a Walmart store between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024. The items in question are those that are usually sold by the pound. For a complete list of items that are included in this suit, you may follow this link.

This also includes bagged citrus such as oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, and anything that is sold in those net-mesh style bags. For a complete list of those kinds of items that are included in the suit, you may follow this link.

What is Walmart Alleged to Have Done Wrong?

According to statements in the suit, it is alleged the giant retailer's point-of-sale machines artificially raised the prices on weighted items that were marked for a discount. This negated the discount and resulted in a higher price for the consumer at checkout. Many of the goods in question were those that were nearing expiration and marked with a yellow discount sticker.

Walmart has denied any wrongdoing but has reportedly agreed to the settlement which is still waiting for court approval.

How Do I Get My Money Back From Walmart?

Assuming that this settlement receives court approval consumers who do not have proof of purchase, aka a receipt, but attest that they purchased between 1 and 50 items involved in the suit will get $10. If you attest you purchased 51-75 products you'll get $15. If you attest that you purchased 76-100 of the affected items your stipend will be $20. And if you attest you purchased even more than that, you could get $25.

If you do have proof of purchase or a receipt you could get up to 2% of your total purchases refunded. That amount is capped at $500. The actual amount of any final payment or payout will be determined by how many people participate in the class-action suit.

If you'd like to file a claim against Walmart you may do so at this link. The deadline to submit your claim form is June 5th. The approval hearing for this settlement is slated for June 12, 2024.
