Major Cruise Line to Discontinue Plastic Water Bottles
If you are thirsty on a Norwegian cruise ship, things are going to be very different for you in the future. Starting on January 1, 2020, Norwegian is discontinuing plastic water bottles on their entire fleet of ships. They are the first cruise line to do so, and the company is saying this will eliminate 6 million single use bottles a year. They will be the first major cruise company to be 'plastic bottle free' by the first of the year.
Norwegian worked with the Just Water corporation, which was founded by actor, rapper and environmentalist Jaden Smith and his family, to find a substitute for the plastic bottles. According to a press release sent out by the company last week, paper water bottles will now be used, with caps made of sugarcane. Just Goods is an eco friendly water company that was started in 2015, and Jaden's famous father, actor Will Smith, told the Chicago Tribune "This was a company born out of a child's love for the ocean".
Norwegian also eliminated single use plastic straws in 2018 on their entire fleet, which includes Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Oceania Cruises, and two island destinations, Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas and Harvest Caye in Belize.
