The ways of commerce are changing across the country. Stores that were once powerful and profitable are now falling by the wayside. It's all part of the evolution of business in America. It's a well-known fact. You either adapt or you die.

Payless, a discount shoe store and a staple business in many towns, especially smaller towns, across the country announced they were filing for bankruptcy on Tuesday. This financial restructuring will mean the closing of some 400 Payless locations across the country. Nine of those locations are in Louisiana.

Select stores in Abbeville, Shreveport, Houma, New Orleans, Slidell, Thibodaux, Gonzales, and Plaquemine are slated to cease operations. Just to be clear, not all Payless locations will be closing their doors. In many cases, there are other Payless locations within a short drive of the shuttered locations that will still be open for business.

Retailers such as Macy's, JC Penney, Kmart, and Sears have recently been in the news for closing and consolidating locations. It is very likely that many other brand name retailers will be considering altering their consumer footprint as well as they fight to remain viable in today's marketplace.
