(KMDL-FM) I come from a family of coin collectors. I don't personally, but my dad and my brothers have had extensive coin collections through the years. That's why when I hear that there could be a very valuable coin lurking in your "plain sight pocket change," I feel obligated to mention it.

The valuable coin we should be looking for could be lurking in the change you keep in the console of your car, your old coat pocket, a purse you no longer use, or it could be sitting on the desk where you drop your keys every night. The problem with this valuable coin, at least for those of us who'd like to find it and cash in on it, is that it looks a lot like all of the other regular coins.

What Kind of Coins Are Valued By Coin Collectors?

In the case of this "special" coin, I will tell you that you are looking for a United States Quarter. It is one of the "State Quarters" that the United States Mint produced to honor each state. The quarters were minted and released in order of that state's Constitutional ratification order.

In this case, the rare quarter that we'd all like to find was one of the first four state quarters minted. The first three were the state quarters for Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Coming in at number four with a mint date of 1999 is the state quarter from Georgia.

As is the case with most "rare coins," the condition of the coin adds a lot to its value. But what gives the coin value is often a mistake. And there were a lot of mistakes made with the 1999 Georgia State Quarter. Here's what you're looking for, and here is what makes that quarter worth up to $10,000 at auction.

How Can You Identify the Rare $10,000 Georgia State Quarter?

There are four key areas to look for:

Weight: The coin weighs 5.9 to 6.3 grams, compared to a normal quarter’s 5.67 grams.
Color: Has a golden or greenish color.
Edge: Has no copper stripe, little to no ridges, and a thicker rim.
Size: Looks thicker than a normal coin.

If you think you have one of these coins, our suggestion would be to bring it to a reputable coin dealer. Or, you could find someone who could certify the coin's authenticity and value for you, perhaps someone who buys and sells gold and other precious metals might be able to assist.
