If there is one thing kids in South Louisiana know, it's how to pretend. Our culture lends itself to believing in make-believe. And maybe that is why there are so many very strong and vibrant local theatre groups thriving in this part of the state. One of those local theater groups focuses on using the dramatic arts as a way to teach young people not only about live performance but about performing in life.

This week our Morton Salt, Week's Island Shaking Out the Good Stuff spotlight shines on the Christian Youth Theater of Lafayette. CYT as it's known has been producing performances for years now. Many of the kids in CYT started as elementary school students and have participated in productions all the way through their high school years.

The organization teaches basic principles of theater while helping young performers learn more about the art of on-stage presentations. This dedication to rehearsal and commitment to their fellow actors helps build strong character in each performer. So, CYT not only teaches kids how to be better actors and singers and dancers, they also teach young people how to be better people in general.

Some of the current performances CYT Lafayette already has on the books are Guys and Dolls from August 8 through the 11th at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. There will be five different performances of that show.

CYT Lafayette will present Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from October 3rd through October 6th. Those performances will be held at Angelle Hall on the campus of the University of Louisiana. That show will feature seven performances.

These are just some of the upcoming shows CYT Lafayette has on the books for now. The group also does camps and classes that are age and level-specific so that no child feels overwhelmed. I can say from personal experience CYT made a huge difference in my daughter's confidence level and that has paid off for her quite well now that she has moved into the adult world.

The Shaking Out the Good Stuff Spotlight is powered by Morton Salt and their Week's Island facility. They offer this platform to showcase groups and individuals around Acadiana that are working to make our quality of life even better. If you'd like to have your group featured on Shaking Out the Good Stuff, send us a note.
