This week's Shaking Out the Good Stuff spotlight from Morton Salt's Weeks Island facility shines on The HUT. HUT in this case is an acronym for Hand Up Thrift Store and the way they "shake out the good stuff" is twofold. The store serves not only those who need a place to purchase clothing and other gently used items at a discount. Their proceeds benefit three charities in Acadiana because of your generosity.

The store's inspiration was actually a church sign that was posted on Lafayette's Emanuel Baptist Church. The posting read, "The only time you look down on someone is when you are giving them a hand up". That resonated with The HUT's founder Jo Lynn Moncrief.

In fact, the vision for the store's name and its mission comes from yet another acronym Help-Achieve-New-Direction-with-Uplifting-Partnerships. Which is what The HUT is all about. The store has partnerships with Affiliated Blind of Louisiana, Family Promise of Acadiana, and TRAIL.

The way The HUT achieves its "helping hand" in the community is through your donations of clothing, furniture, toys, electronics, household treasures, books, shoes, purses, and you get the idea. Chances are if you've purchased it for use in your home and no longer need it, The HUT will take it and make a difference in the process.

You'll find The HUT just off Johnston Street behind Lafayette Music, their actual street address is 105 Leonie. Their store hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. If you'd like to make a donation you can contact them by calling 337-704-4444.

Shaking Out the Good Stuff is especially interested in promoting grassroots organizations that don't normally find the public spotlight shined in their direction. So, if you know of an individual or group of good-hearted people who are doing things in our community to make it a better place to live and work, we'd love to hear about your story. You can contact us through the station app or via email.
