Americans are looking forward to one of the first holidays that we've had since the COVID-19 vaccinations have become available. And travel industry insiders are predicting a record number of motorists for Memorial Day weekend. And we are ready to get out on the road, but safely, of course.

A new program will be in effect for the holiday weekend with the Louisiana, Tennessee, and Mississippi State Police forces. The “Line to Line” traffic safety initiative will involve additional safety measures on the roads that connect all three states. WLBT TV reports, via WBRZ in Baton Rouge, that extra state police will be patrolling Interstate 55 to do everything from removing impaired drivers, checking for seatbelt usage, to preventing vehicles from speeding. Checkpoints will be set up for enforcement by officials from all three states.

Col. Randy Ginn, director of the Mississippi Highway Patrol. tells WBRZ  “If everyone will simply slow down, buckle up, put down their phone and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, we can all have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend.” That sounds like great advice to me. The official holiday weekend enforcement period begins on  Friday, May 28 at 12:01 a.m. and ends Monday, May 31 at midnight.
