The Next Tropical System?
Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center have been quite busy over the past several weeks with Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose, and Maria. Now that forecast unit is keeping a close eye on an area of disturbed weather located just south of Cuba.
Currently, this system is a broad area of low pressure with some associated showers and thunderstorms. The system is forecast to move northward across Cuba and into the Florida Straits.
Conditions are favorable for further development over the next few days as the system is expected to move near or over South Florida by this weekend. An approaching frontal system is expected to push the system out to sea and inhibit development as the weekend progresses.
Currently, forecasters are giving the system a 40% probability of strengthening into a tropical cyclone over the next five days. Should that happen and the system reaches tropical storm status it would earn the name Nate.
