There's a few things that creep me out about Nutria Rats. the giant hairless tail is one of those things. The other are those nasty orange teeth you can spot from clear across Girard Park. I mean, Nutria teeth are orange because they're so nasty, right? Not so fast...

I decided to do a lil research to see what I could find out about these nightmarish teeth, and it seems I've been giving the ole rat a bad shake. Nutria teeth are actually supposed to be orange.

From pawnnation.com -

"The coloring is caused by their enamel, which includes a pigment that consists of the mineral iron. This pigment is the cause of the orange color of the teeth. The iron in it gives the teeth a tougher and firmer texture, which enables the smoother portions in the back to grind down more rapidly. All of this ends up giving the teeth a chisel-like form that helps them greatly with gnawing."

So ya see, they don't have yuck-mouth because they don't brush, the iron in their enamel turns the teeth orange.

They still creep me out though...
