It is the prime time here in South Louisiana for everyone to be sick. As soon as one person in the family or office catches a cold, so do the rest of us. Many of us just give it up to the common cold or a sinus infection. What you may not know is that it could be something a little worse.

Strep throat. We have all heard of it. The tricky part about Strep is that it can mimic the common sore throat. Here are a few of the sings you want to look out for when or if you feel yourself or a loved one coming down with something. According to WebMD:

  1. Moms were right! Looking in the throat is what you want to do first when coming down with what feels like a cold or sore throat. Strep throat will cause white patches and red, swollen tonsils. Pus can sometimes be seen in the back of the throat as well.
  2. Cold symptoms like runny nose and coughing are less likely with Strep, however they may help to differentiate between the two. Strep can  also cause your lymph nodes to swell be sure so keep that in mind.
  3. Check for fever. Colds can cause a low grade temp, but a sore throat with a temp around 101 is probably Strep.
  4. If the pain in your throat is hard to bear and will not subside, you are most likely looking at Strep throat.
  5. In severe cases, Strep can cause a red rash to form around your neck that can spread. This is known as Scarlet fever so be sure to keep an eye out.

I have personally had Strep throat twice and it is miserable. The best thing would be to see your physician for a Strep test. If positive, you will be given antibiotics that will take care of it.

There were a few things that helped me the most when I came down with Strep. Stay hydrated, eat soothing foods like ice cream or even soup, gargle salt water (it may not feel great initially, but it will help) and put a warm compress on your neck when you lay down. Also, pain relievers like ibuprofen or Advil, and cough drops can help ease the pain.

Always remember to wash your hands and dress properly according to weather conditions. Just a few tips for staying healthy in the new year!
