YOUNGSVILLE, La. (KMDL-FM) - It's always better to report on new places opening than on businesses closing, so let's do that.

A new açai bowl eatery called Downtown Açai will be opening soon in downtown Youngsville.

In a Facebook post by Youngsville Mayor Ken Ritter, Downtown Açai will be opening in the coming weeks.

Where Will Downtown Açai Be Located?

The new business will be located at 501 Church Street, in the same building as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Youngsville.

Downtown Açai is being opened by Cortney Meyers and her family, who also own Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

The Inspiration Behind Downtown Açai in Youngsville

Owner Cortney Meyers says her passion for açai bowls began in 2014 during a trip to California for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu training, where she had lunch at an açai café and immediately became hooked.

After that, Meyers made it a point to visit açai cafés in every town she visited.

She says she simply wants to bring delicious and healthy super food to Youngsville and change lives one açai bowl at a time.

What Exactly is Açai?

Açai na tigela (meaning açai in the bowl) is a sweet Brazilian snack food. It is a dish made with the frozen and mashed fruit of the açai palm.

It's described as having an "earthy" or creamy taste. Its texture is granular before blending, and it has a tartness from its high acidity content.

Açai is typically served as a smoothie in a bowl, usually mixed with guaraná syrup, and is commonly topped with granola and banana.
