LL Flooring, the hardwood flooring retailer once known as Lumber Liquidators, is now officially going out of business and will soon be closing all its Louisiana locations.

On August 11, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with hopes of finding a buyer for the company. That never came to fruition, so the Virginia-based company will now be "winding down operations instead of closing just some of its stores."

LL Flooring has already begun the process of shuttering stores, with closing sales at hundreds of stores already underway.

When will LL Flooring stores be closing?

The retailer says that store closures should be wrapped up over the next 12 weeks, with timing varying by location.

“This is not the outcome that any of us had hoped for,” LL Flooring CEO Charles Tyson wrote in a letter to customers. “As we begin to wind down operations and close our stores, we are committed to doing so as smoothly as possible to minimize the impact on you, our associates and the communities we serve.”

How many LL Flooring retail stores are there?

Earlier this year, LL Flooring had more than 400 stores across America. A few weeks ago, when they announced their bankruptcy filing, a total of 94 were already beginning to close. But now the closings will affect all their stores.

With the shutdown comes just under 2,000 employees getting the ax. According to court documents, 99% of the workers were full-time in the U.S. across retail, corporate and distribution roles.

The history of LL Flooring

The company's history dates back more than 30 years. Tom Sullivan founded the brick-and-mortar retailer in 1993 as a modest operation in Massachusetts. He later expanded nationwide.

Known for decades as Lumber Liquidators, the company officially changed its name at the beginning of 2022.

Unfortunately, the retailer faced litigation in 2015 after a segment of "60 Minutes" reported that the laminate flooring it was selling contained illegal and dangerous levels of formaldehyde.

The company later said it would stop selling the product, which was manufactured in China, and agreed to pay $36 million to settle two class-action lawsuits in 2017.

LL Flooring had difficulty turning a profit over the last few years, with the company reporting loss after loss. Net sales fell 18.5% in 2023 amid declines in foot traffic and weak demand.
