I think we are getting pretty comfortable with the idea that the year 2020 has a lot more sucker punches left for us between now and December. One way this pandemic year could get even worse is with an even more active tropical season.

So far, Hurricane Season 2020 has been one for the record books. We've recorded our fifth named storm earlier than any other year in history and we could soon add a sixth named storm to what appears to be a very active year in the tropics.

Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center are currently watching an area of low pressure centered over land in South Carolina. That system is expected to move offshore later today and in doing so could find the necessary components to strengthen into a tropical depression or tropical storm over the next five days.

If the system should earn a name it would be called Fay. It would also be the earliest we've ever had six named storms in a single season. Right now forecasters are giving this system a 50% probability of spinning up into a tropical cyclone between now and this weekend.

The most likely affected areas of the country will be the Outer Banks of North Carolina and the Delmarva Peninsula. Should the system strengthen and stay on the track model guidance there could be tropical weather in New York and New Jersey by late this weekend or early next week

As of now, the remainder of the tropics and the Gulf of Mexico remain rather quiet.
