Youngsville Mayor Ken Ritter told members of the Facilities Committee of the Lafayette Parish School Board that he would like to see some progress toward a new public high school in Youngsville during his four-year term.

Right now students in both Youngsville and Broussard attend Comeaux High School, which has a student population of nearly 2,000.

"Everyone is very pleased with the quality of the education system in the city of Youngsville," Ritter told board members. "What we are hearing constantly is that there are inadequate classrooms, and that is something that has a lot of us concerned."

Funding has long been the hurdle to overcome in terms of building a news school, but Ritter said he liked a model being used to fund a new terminal at Lafayette Regional Airport, where shoppers in Lafayette Parish will pay until the end of November an extra penny on every dollar on items they purchase and where that money will be strictly used for the airport project.

Other funding models include bonds and some other tax mechanism.
