Lafayette Parish students can thank Mother Nature for an extra day off.

The Lafayette Parish School System announced early Wednesday morning that classes for the day (May 19, 2021) have been canceled because of the threat of flooding. Essential personnel must still report to work.

Here is the full release sent by the Lafayette Parish School System at 5:30 Wednesday morning:

The Lafayette Parish School System announced that the entire district will be closed on Wednesday, May
19, 2021, due to the potential for severe weather and flooding in the area. With the potential of flooding
and rain throughout the day, and with student and staff safety being our top priority, we feel this is the
best decision in this uncertain situation.

LPSS district offices and facilities will be closed, but essential personnel will still report to work. As a
reminder, essential personnel should report to work only when it is safe to do so and should contact
their immediate supervisor if unable to report.

Please continue to remain safe, and we will reopen schools as soon as it is safe to do so.

In addition to Lafayette Parish schools, Jeff Davis Parish and Calcasieu Parish schools are closed today because of weather-related concerns. All other Acadiana-area schools are open.
