(KMDL-FM) As we move into the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 17, 2026, things are a little uneasy and anxious along the coast of Louisiana. A strengthening tropical system is poised to make a run at the state's coastline later today and into the evening. A Tropical Storm Warning, Flood Warning, and Flood Watch have been posted for the region.

As of the 0100 AM CDT Intermediate Advisory from the National Hurricane Center, the center of circulation associated with Potential Tropical Cyclone 1 was located about 295 miles southwest of Lake Charles, Louisiana. The storm system's motion was noted to be 5 mph in a northeasterly direction.

Where Is the Tropical System in the Gulf Expected to Make Landfall?

The storm is forecast to remain on that heading, generally to the northeast, over the next several days. There is expected to be an increase in forward speed as the day progresses.

Based on model guidance and current data inputs, forecasters believe the system will move parallel to the Texas coast for much of the day before making another landfall in either extreme southeastern Texas or, more likely, southwest Louisiana.

The forecast timing suggests that conditions along the Louisiana coast and inland as far north as I-10 will start to worsen later this afternoon. The region should expect the heaviest rain and strongest winds in the evening and overnight hours.

Additional rainfall amounts between today and Sunday are forecast to be between four and six inches. However, most of the model guidance suggests rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches. It is possible that some localized totals could be even higher than six inches before all is said and done with this system.

When is the Rain Forecast to End Across South Louisiana?

Rain chances will remain high on Thursday, but conditions should begin to improve. By the weekend, the forecast will start to resemble a typical summertime forecast for the area. That means partly cloudy skies, humid conditions, and the chance of afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms.
