The good news is the tropics are expected to be quiet for the next week. The bad news Lafayette weather will include a good chance of tropical showers over the next few days.

Last weekend we were watching Tropical Storm Chantal but that system fizzled out and was really nothing more than a tropical rain maker for some of the Caribbean islands. South Louisiana's weather will feel tropical but that is because of conditions that are quite typical for our area this time of year.

The catalyst for our better than average chance of showers on Monday and Tuesday is an upper level low pressure system that extends from Missouri southward into the Gulf of Mexico. This system when combined with a southerly flow generated by a high pressure system off to the east will create instability and a lot of moisture in the atmosphere. This will lead to a better than average chance of afternoon and early evening thunderstorms to start the work week.

The Storm Team 3 Weather Lab has the forecast shaping up like this. The National Weather Service in Lake Charles is a little more aggressive in their forecast as far as rain chances go. The bottom line is this, a typical Summer week of weather along and south of I-10.
