A dam has failed at Bayou Sorrel in Iberville Parish, and the Cajun Navy is broadcasting rescue efforts live as a mandatory evacuation order is in place for the area.

At the time of this post, volunteers were on-site, forming a human chain to move sandbags into place to try to alleviate the flooding.

In the video below, crews are working to place cement barricades to, hopefully, block the rushing water.

According to WBRZ, the dam, which failed at around 10 this morning, was part of a barrier along Highway 75 in Bayou Sorrel, which is about 10 miles (as the crow flies) from Plaquemine in Iberville Parish.

The aqua dam had been set up to prevent flooding in the area, which has seen water rising since the beginning of the recent series of storms over the past week. The dam was shielding the town of Bayou Sorrel from local waterways, swollen from the recent rains. Now that the dam has breached, water is steadily flowing in.

The Iberville Parish Council issued a plea to anyone who is in the affected area:

THIS IS AN EMERGENCY MESSAGE FROM THE IBERVILLE PARISH COUNCIL’S OFFICE OF EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS.
A MANDATORY EMERGENCY EVACUATION HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR ALL BAYOU SORREL RESIDENTS SOUTH OF J R. DRIVE AND ALL BAYOU PIGEON RESIDENTS.
YOU ARE ADVISED TO EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY TO THE CARL F. GRANT CIVIC CENTER RED CROSS SHELTER - Iberville Parish Council, Facebook
The Council identified the ONLY evacuation route as Highway 404 to Plaquemine and encouraged those evacuating to take only medicines and essential items.

According to the Louisiana State Fire Marshal Office, Bayou Pigeon is in danger of flooding, as well.

If you are in that area, you are encouraged to take the necessary actions to protect yourself. If your home is prone to flooding, please evacuate to higher ground.
