When Will it Stop? Flooding Risk Continues in Louisiana
(KMDL-FM) Memorial Day observances and gathering might need to be moved indoors depending on when they are scheduled this weekend in Louisiana. Forecasters with the National Weather Service are suggesting that Friday's threat of heavy showers and downpours will become even more likely across the region on Saturday and Sunday.

The Weather Predicition Center even has a large portion of Louisiana at risk for Excessive Rain on both Saturday and Sunday. An excessive rain event is when rainfall rates exceed an areas ability to drain. In the Lafayette area just think of how Ambassador Caffery Parkway fills with water during and after a heavy downpour, that's an excessive rain event.
What Happened to Louisiana's Predicted Drought This Summer?
It's hard to believe but just about a month ago there were concerns that Louisiana and the Gulf South were about to enter into a period of drought again. Thanks to the current forecast it does look as if the region will avoid any droughts or dry weather burn bans for at least several weeks.
There will be no issue with drought with projected rainfall totals such as the ones you see below. KATC's Rob Perillo really breaks down the scenario in his blog post on the TV station's website. It's a good read.
What's causing the prolong rainfall is stalled frontal boundary. It's situation across northern Louisiana. The southern branch of the jetstream, a high altitude high velocity current of air is pushing a series of upper level disturbances into and across the area where they are interacting with that frontal boundary. The abundant moisture in the atmosphere makes Louisiana ripe for heavy rains.

The current forecast projections call for an extended period of heavy rain and downpours all the way through the middle of next week. But it won't be raining all the time. This unpredictiable timing could lead to postponements or delays in some holiday weekend events. Make sure you have our station app for the latest developments.

What is the Chance of Rain Across South Louisiana Memorial Day Weekend?
Rain probabilities for Saturday are listed at 80%, for Sunday they are listed at 100%, and on Memorial Day the probability of rain along the I-10 corridor will be 90%.
Rain probabilities of 80% are forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday with even more showers and storms forecast across the area Wednesday night into Thursday. And while rain probabilities may be high, that doesn't mean it will be raining all the time.
There will be pockets of dry weather in between some of the passing showers and the threat of rainfall does decrease during the evening hours.
